Students have embraced the true spirit of Christmas by cooking meals for families in need in the Highlands.
Professional cookery students from Inverness College UHI have been cooking meals for charity Gateway’s ‘Food for Families’ 2017 project. They are part of a larger group of more than 50 volunteers who are helping to prepare more than 3,000 cooked, frozen meals, to families over the festive period.
Our students will be making 240 portions of mince and potatoes, macaroni cheese and lasagne over three days in December to support the charity.
The meals will be cooked at Inverness College UHI by students before being collected and distributed by the charity to those in need.
The university is also donating 50 Christmas dinners for Highland Homeless Trust residents living in supported accommodation.
Stuart Stirling, programme manager for hospitality at Inverness College UHI said: “Our Professional Cookery students get the opportunity to cook fine dining in our Sheiling Training Restaurant for paying guests every week, but we really wanted to do something different this Christmas and give something back to the community. With more than 40 students enrolled on our cookery courses and state-of-the-art kitchen facilities, we have the means to really help people in need. When we approached the Highland Homeless Trust to see if we could support them this Christmas, we were really moved by the Food For Families project and everything the charity is doing to help vulnerable people. It will also be a challenge for the students as they don’t do a lot of large production cooking and hopefully will get them thinking a bit more about the true meaning of Christmas. We’re just delighted to be able to such a worthwhile cause at a time when it’s most needed.”

#Day4 - Great job by our HNC Acting and Performance students who raised £200 for MFR Cash for Kids by singing Christmas songs and carols in the Eastgate Shopping Centre! Friday, 1st December...
#Day 1 - 10 per cent of all coffee profits from our pop-up coffee/craft shop in the Sheiling Training Restaurant will be going to Marie Curie. The pop-up shop runs every Friday in December from 8.30am to 10am.
Thank you also to Millburn Academy pupil Shona Beveridge (17) who switched on some of our Christmas lights. Shona attends Inverness College UHI every Friday to study Early Education and Childcare as part of our Skills for Work schools programme. Shona, was diagnosed with Niemann-Pick Type C - a rare neurodegenerative condition that causes her difficulty with many aspects of her life, including movement, talking and eating - two years ago. She recently took part in The One Show's Rickshaw Challenge, which saw Shona and a team of five other riders cycle 500 miles from London to Glasgow, raising more than £5 million for BBC Children in Need.
