Inverness College UHI drama students present online digital showcase
A DIGITAL showcase celebrating work by final year drama students at Inverness College UHI will launch next week.
Swansong: Performers’ Showcase is an online event featuring 19 original, solo digital performances showcasing the creative talents of fourth year BA (Hons) Drama and Performance students.
The showcase is a celebration of the skills they have developed during their time as students. It features a range of work, from one person narratives to interactive drama and storytelling.
The students’ work will be premiered at 7pm daily, Monday to Saturday, between 26 April and 17 May on the Swansong: Performers’ Showcase website and the @SwansongUHI page on YouTube, with spotlight performances on the @SwansongUHI Facebook page.
The showcase forms part of the students’ autonomous performer module, whereby students are tasked with writing, devising, performing and producing their own solo production.
Usually, the students would take their 20-minute performance on a mini-tour of the Highlands and Islands and Moray, however, the pandemic means it will take place online this year. Students are encouraged to develop this work further for live fringe performances in the future.
Stephanie Smart, a drama lecturer at Inverness College UHI, said: “Lockdown has taken a lot from our creative industries, but it hasn’t dampened the talents or spirits of our students who have been working exceptionally hard to develop their solo drama for a digital audience. Despite not being able to tour, the online showcase allows them to share their work far beyond what we could hope for. I am incredibly proud of everything they have achieved this year.”
Module tutor Ruby Worth added: “These final year students have worked amazingly through the challenges of the pandemic felt by so many of us. They have continued to show up week in week out and work despite these challenges, have learned to cultivate a strong work ethic, self-motivation and a positive outlook, continuing to act as encouraging witnesses for each other.”
