Jeniffer Simpson, BSc Oral Health Science

Jeniffer Simpson (42) from Alness was told in school that she was not academic enough to go to university.

However, the former dental nurse began studying a BSc Oral Health Science at UHI Inverness when she decided to upskill to become a dental therapist.

Jeniffer, who was pleased she did not have to relocate to study her degree, graduated with distinction in September 2022. She also won a national undergraduate award for her literature review on the dental health benefits of drinking green tea.

Jeniffer said: “The course pushed me out of my comfort zone and allowed me to grow both in my practical skills and my academic skills. After graduating I went straight into employment as a dental therapist working to my full remit in a local practice.

“My studies have elevated me into a more advanced professional position and have opened up the option of postgraduate courses should I wish to pursue them in the future.

“The course was challenging, however the support, advice and constructive feedback from the university and NHS staff was fantastic. The satisfaction of working with patients and supporting their improvement is very rewarding.”
