Dr Alessandra Campoli

Alessandra Campoli teaches on BA Contemporary Art and Contextualised Practice and Visual Communication and Design courses, specialising in research skills, collaborative practices and contextual studies. She studied Art History and Art Management Psychology at the University of Rome “La Sapienza” before moving to Nepal to work as a researcher investigating the cultural and social impact of contemporary creative practices in South and Southeast Asia. Her research experience led to her practice-based PhD project Haunted Tropicality: Gothic Motifs and Melancholic Imagery toward an Aesthetics of Darkness. She completed her PhD in Visual Cultures in 2012 at the University of the West of Scotland.  

Since 2004, she has undertaken a great deal of research on contemporary art and visual cultures. Her research interests include cultural studies, anthropology of art, creative economies, ecological thinking, performance art, site-specific installation, practice-based research methods and the relation between creative practices and sustainability. She is also interested in the Creative and Cultural Industries in the Global South. 

Her research work has been integrated with the roles of Visiting Lecturer in Fine Art at Silpakorn University, Bangkok, Associate Lecturer in Art History at the University of Rome “La Sapienza” and Academic Developer and Tutor at the Interactive Design Institute, before joining UHI as an Art and Design Lecturer in 2018. 

Her artworks combine multimedia installation, photography, video, new media technologies and performance. At the origin of her creative practice is research into myths, ecology, invisible geographies, memories, haunted landscapes and ephemerality.
