Meet our students
Hairdressing Student: Laura Ross
"Having previously studied to Masters level in Design & Marketing, I found myself working in management roles in the third sector, which was very rewarding, however, I struggled to find job security and felt that my creativity was being stifled, spending most of my time behind a computer. I felt like I needed a practical trade, so that I would always have the means to make a living.
Fortunately I was accepted to study at Inverness College UHI as a mature student. I was really impressed by the facilities and the knowledge of the lecturers. They helped me to develop my skills through hands on salon training, backed up with theory. They encouraged my love of vintage & bridal styling and supported me in areas where I wasn't as confident. It was great having real clients to practice on, but knowing the lecturers were there if I ever needed guidance. One client ended up showing my work to a friend, which lead to the job I'm in today.
During my time at Inverness College UHI there were lots of events to get involved with & gain experience including competitions, fashion shows and styling hair for music events ...I took every opportunity I could to add to my portfolio & even won a few medals!
Since leaving Inverness College UHI, I've been working full time at The Dolls House where I've been specialising in bridal and occasion hair. I have been lucky enough to work in some stunning venues like Skibo Castle & Achnagairn Estate, been featured in Tie the Knot magazine and last year I was a finalist at the SHABA (Scottish Hair & Beauty) Awards.
I still use the skills I learned at University as PA to the salon owner, and who knows, I might have my own business one day ...but for now, I'm very lucky and grateful to be where I am!"
