About...

The Maritime Sector is a major employer in Scotland and is particularly important for coastal and island communities. Scotland has the third largest salmon aquaculture in the world with farmed salmon being the UKs biggest single food export. As a result, there is a growing and substantial need for a variety of roles including Fish Farm Technicians, Feed Technicians and environmental monitors. If you have an interest in biodiversity and sustainable fish farming this is a great opportunity to find out more about the industry.

This introductory NPA course at SCQF 4 will develop the skills, knowledge and attitudes needed for work in the aquaculture industry. If you have an interest in outdoor work and enjoy learning in a hands-on setting, then this course will introduce to the fundamentals required to work in the ever-expanding aquaculture sub-sector.

Delivery

Attend timetabled classes delivered by our college lecturer in a virtual classroom. Students access all their learning and assessments via Brightspace or Google Classrooms.

Course content...

Areas for study may include:

•    An Introduction to Northern European Aquaculture
•    A Local Investigation (Environmental Analysis)
•    An Introduction to Finfish (this will include dissection of fish)
•    An Introduction to Shellfish
•    Basic Aquaculture Seamanship
•    Introduction to Scottish Fisheries

Each student will have the opportunity to complete a rope work course and gain an insight into how the boats used in the industry are built and maintained This course is not just about feeding fish it will give you the opportunity to explore the jobs available in the industry. Students with interest in computing and engineering please don’t overlook aquaculture, feeding processes are now remotely operated and the industry will always need people to fix things.

What next...

This course will provide you with a progression route from school through college to work based learning and modern apprenticeships. You will have the basic knowledge and skills required to enter the aquaculture sector, which will allow you to hit the ground running when you secure your first job in aquaculture.

You may also want to consider progressing to the SVQ in Aquaculture and relevant locally devised courses at SCQF levels 4–6.
