About...
This award focusses on the technical skills required to safely work with a range of computer hardware and network components, and highlights the importance of problem solving using troubleshooting techniques.
You will be introduced to the practical skills involved in setting up, maintaining and upgrading computer systems as well as some basic knowledge of the structure of a computer system.
You will gain an understanding of how to correctly install and configure a range of system software, such as operating systems, the wide variety and classification of application software, and the methods of obtaining software and the legal issues involved. You will also gain practical skills in setting up a small computer network using appropriate methodology and select tools to test and troubleshoot.

The award consists of the following three units:
- Install and maintain computer hardware;
- Install and maintain computer software;
- Computer networking fundamentals.
Semester 2 (January to June) - National Progression Award in Cyber Security
This award focusses on making the online environment safe; both for you as an individual, and the wider community. Cyber security is the body of technologies, processes and practices designed to protect networks, computers, programmes and data from attack, damage or unauthorized access.
The national units within the award are designed to incorporate the three main areas of cyber security. The aim is to produce knowledgeable and skilled people who are aware of the potential misuses of, and unauthorised access to, computer systems, but who use these competences for legal and ethical purposes.
The award consists of the following three units:
- Data security;
- Digital forensics;
- Ethical hacking.

Entry requirements...
Four National 4 passes, including Maths and English, working at or towards National 5 level. Pupils should demonstrate an interest in the subject area.
