Author: Mandy Haggith
Contributing to the North West Highlands ‘Blue Corridor’ project. It will investigate artists who take inspiration from the sea and the experience of local people who sail, paddle and swim in the sea around Assynt. Mandy will carry out interviews with artists, crafts people, sailors, kayakers, the skiff team, paddle-boarders, wild swimmers, snorkelers, and divers, and those who support them through businesses and infrastructure such as Lochinver Harbour. She will also interview individuals and groups and invite creative responses to the history and ecology of the sea and their experience, barriers, threats, well-being impacts and potential of these marine activities. The research will explore the extent to which those who take part are motivated by the low carbon footprint of the activity (as compared with, say, sea angling by motorboat or water-skiing). The results will be written up in entertaining ways, as dialogues, poems, and stories, illustrated with images or other artworks wherever possible.
