Social Impact Framework for HMP Highland: Management KTP with Scottish Prison Service

KTP Associate: Struan Charters

Researchers: Vicky Johnson and Sarah Wagner

The Management Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) between UHI Inverness's Centre for Living Sustainability and the Scottish Prison Service (SPS) is the first of its kind in Scotland and will shape the development of HMP Highland, currently under construction.

Management KTPs help organisations with access to the knowledge base to improve processes and capabilities.  The study looks at different interventions designed to support rehabilitation and reduce reoffending and will investigate how to deliver better futures for prisoners and measure the social impact of prisons on communities.

By providing access to the latest academic insights and expertise, the KTP aims to help the SPS boost its effectiveness and productivity at HMP Highland in Eastfield Way, Inverness - the first new prison constructed in the region in more than a century.  The project represents a unique opportunity to inform practices at the prison and help improve prisoner and community outcomes, with the potential to provide significant learning to help people in custody across Scotland and deliver safer and more engaged communities.
