It's a 10 from us! Inverness College UHI students take part in live danceathon for Children in Need

Students at Inverness College UHI will be donning their dancing shoes and taking part in a danceathon on Wednesday 11th November in aid of BBC Children in Need.

The danceathon will be streamed live on the Inverness College UHI YouTube channel for family, friends and the public to watch and support.

The Supported Education students, who all have learning disabilities, have set up a Just Giving page to raise money for Children in Need.

Skillsbuilder 2 student Amy Urquhart (22), from Inverness, explained the class wanted to do something to help children, young people and their families who might be struggling emotionally or financially due to COVID-19.

Amy said: We have all found the pandemic challenging. We wanted to plan a fun and inclusive online event to raise money for children who might need a little bit of extra help.”

The students, who are on campus on a Wednesday, will split into two teams and take it in turns to dance to their favourite tunes for two hours, following COVID-19 health and safety guidance.

Supported education students at West Highland College UHI will also take part.

The danceathon will start at 11.05am, following the two minutes silence for Armistice Day, and run until 1.05pm.

Anne-Marie Harmsworth, programme leader, described the event a wonderful opportunity to show the students they can still achieve their fundraising aspirations with a little help from technology.

She said: “We have partnered up with colleagues and students from our partners at West Highland College UHI for the danceathon, demonstrating how friendships and communities can be fostered and strengthened, despite current circumstances. I am so proud of the students’ planning, preparation and commitment to thinking of others.”
