This course is an excellent introductory qualification for those wishing to pursue a career in the fast-paced world of professional cookery. It is structured to develop the skills, knowledge, and understanding you will require to secure employment in the Hospitality Industry.
This course is ideally suited for school leavers who have studied Hospitality, determined or mature students wishing to reskill or pursue a career in professional cookery.
Entry requirements
This course is ideally suited for school leavers who have studied Hospitality, determined or mature students wishing to reskill or pursue a career in professional cookery.
School leavers:
- All applicants will be interviewed to assess their interest and ability in cookery.
- SCQF Level 4 Professional Cookery
- Four National 4 passes
Mature students:
- No formal entry requirements.
- Evidence of an interest in this subject should be demonstrated in your personal statement.
- Work experience will be considered.
The course is structured to include a significant practical ‘hands-on’ element as well as associated theory units required to complete the qualification such as Hygiene and Health and Safety. The main emphasis is on professional cookery in practical classes, where you will learn a wide array of dishes suitable for a restaurant environment. Practical lessons are delivered in the Sheiling kitchen with an emphasis on developing knife skills, cooking, and presentation skills, working safely and food hygiene.

Fees
If you have been living in the UK for at least 3 years, are ordinary resident in Scotland before the course start date it is likely that you will not have to pay fees for your full time course. Please check our Fee Waiver Policy.
Full time students will automatically receive the fee waiver if they are eligible. We will use the information provided on your course application form to determine whether you are eligible.

Funding
You may be eligible to apply for an Educational Maintenance Allowance or Bursary.
Additional costs
You will be required to purchase a kit/uniform as part of this course (between £300 and £350). If you are eligible for a bursary these costs will be covered. www.inverness.uhi.ac.uk/study/funding/
What can I do on completion of my course?
Successful achievement will prepare you for entry into the SVQ Professional Cookery at SCQF level 6, with further progression possible into hospitality.

Professional cookery in the Highlands has never been as popular as it is today. The SVQ Professional Cookery course at SCQF level 5 gives you an opportunity to prepare, cook and serve a range of sweet and savoury dishes in our Sheiling training kitchen and restaurant, which serves lunch to students, staff and the public.
